About The Orlando Chronicle
The Magic City, Chronicled
The Orlando Chronicle covers Orlando, FL and the rest of Central Florida: the growth, the government, the business of a region that never stops building, and the everyday life of the people who call it home. The region hosts the world. The Chronicle is written for the hosts, the people who know I-4 at rush hour and plan their afternoons around the summer thunderstorms.
Four counties, one region
The coverage area is Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Lake counties: Orlando and its neighborhoods, Sanford and the Seminole suburbs, Kissimmee and St. Cloud, and Lake County from Clermont to Mount Dora. They share an interstate, an airport, a job market and a hurricane season, and the Chronicle covers them as the one region they have become.
What you’ll find here
Data Desk reports do the heavy lifting. Each one takes public data about the four counties and works out what it says, using sources such as the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, NOAA and the open-data portals run by the City of Orlando and Orange County. The Special Reports Desk takes on bigger reference projects, chief among them the county-by-county voting guides, kept current through early voting. Sunday mornings bring the free weekly newsletter, made for the first cup of coffee.
The beats we keep
- Growth and housing: prices, rents and the subdivisions spreading south and west.
- Work and wages: the tourism economy and everything else that keeps the region working.
- Getting around: I-4, the toll roads, SunRail, LYNX and the crash record.
- Government and politics: commissions, city halls, school boards and the ballot.
- Schools, health and public safety.
- Weather and the environment: hurricane season, heat, lakes and springs.
Independence & ownership
The Chronicle is a Vector Press publication, and Vector Press stands on its own: an independent local news company, not a link in a chain, not a hedge fund’s holding and not the house organ of any party or advocacy group. Coverage decisions are made in the newsroom and nowhere else. Two things keep the lights on, advertising and reader memberships. Advertisers rent space beside the journalism; they don’t get a vote on what goes in it.
How we know what we print
In short: public data downloaded from the agencies that publish it, every figure calculated and then recalculated separately, and an editor’s read before anything runs. The full process, from story choice to corrections, is in our Editorial Standards.
Write to us
The newsroom reads its mail: contactus@theorlandochronicle.com, and its texts: (407) 759-6200. Send tips, questions, complaints and corrections. Spotted a wrong address in a voting guide? The guide’s own “Report an error” form works as well.
