West Melbourne police confirmed the arrests of a man and a woman earlier this week following the death of a 2-year-old girl that occurred earlier this year, WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando reported. Authorities have attributed the toddler's death to the consumption of kratom pills.
The arrests took place on Wednesday, according to West Melbourne police, as reported by WESH 2 News. The girl's father is reportedly facing charges of manslaughter and child neglect, the West Melbourne Police Department confirmed to WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando.
Kratom, derived from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia, contains psychoactive compounds and is considered a "drug of concern" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to risks including addiction, abuse, and dependence. The FDA has not approved kratom for any medical use, and the substance lacks consistent federal regulation, leading to varying product quality and concentration, particularly with potent concentrated forms.
Nationwide, kratom exposure reports have escalated significantly. U.S. poison centers recorded 14,449 kratom exposure reports between 2015 and 2025, an approximate 1,200% increase during that period. A study conducted from 2011 to 2017 specifically noted that 69% of the 48 kratom exposures involving children aged 12 and younger occurred in children under two years old.
In Florida, the issue of kratom safety has led to legislative action and public concern. State medical examiners have linked at least 587 overdose deaths to 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a compound found in kratom, and related chemical compounds since 2013. The state recently expanded emergency restrictions on highly concentrated 7-OH, establishing strict concentration limits to combat manufacturers circumventing earlier bans.
These legal actions by state authorities and the FDA underscore ongoing efforts to address the dangers associated with kratom, especially highly potent variants and products marketed in ways that could appeal to children.
