The City of Orlando has activated speed cameras across twenty school zones, with drivers found exceeding posted limits set to begin receiving warnings on Monday, as reported by WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando. This marks the initial phase of enforcement for the new cameras, serving as a warning period before civil penalties are imposed, according to the same report.

Following this warning period, violations will incur a $100 civil penalty for drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph in active school zones, according to city data. The comprehensive warning period for the program officially commenced on October 5, 2026, with full enforcement, including financial penalties, slated to begin on November 30, 2026, 45 days after the warning period started.

The implementation of these cameras follows the passage of Florida House Bill 657 in 2023, which granted municipalities the authority to utilize such electronic enforcement measures. City officials cited a 2024 speed study that identified specific schools with heightened safety risks for pedestrians and students due to prevalent speeding. That study indicated over 50% of drivers in the 20 selected school zones were speeding during school hours. This initiative aligns with Orlando’s broader 'Vision Zero' goal, which aims to eliminate pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries by 2040.

It is important to note that the City of Orlando’s school zone camera program operates independently of Orange County’s separate initiative, which is scheduled for full enforcement in January 2027. Across Florida, school speed camera programs have encountered ongoing legal challenges and debates, leading to instances where tickets have been dismissed and some programs temporarily suspended, prompting calls for legislative clarification.
